The project for the replacement of the CBD Amenities is in progress

Council has successfully secured funding through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure fund to complete important and long overdue upgrades to the CBD Amenities located in Henty Street, Portland.

Council undertook consultation seeking input from community for ideas and considerations to develop concept designs for the redevelopment of the amenities, and as a result the following elements have been included in the design:

  • Safety was the highest priority of the community as the existing facilities do not give a perception of safety when using them
  • Improved accessibility providing safe and easy use for community members of all abilities
  • Ease of cleaning to be able to provide well-maintained facilities
  • Hard wearing fit out and anti-vandal where possible

The project is now in progress. You can view the concept designs here.

Exciting news for our CBD! The long-awaited upgrade to the public amenities is progressing, with site delivery and installation of the new building scheduled between 22–26 September.

This marks a key milestone in the project, bringing us closer to delivering a modern, accessible facility for our community.

    What’s happening next:

    • Installation of the amenities building onsite
    • Fit off of internal fixtures and services
    • Roof installation
    • Final commissioning and handover

    Traffic Advisory:

During the delivery and installation period, traffic in the area will be busy, particularly around the Henty Street carpark entrance. While there will be no expected road closures, access to the Aldi carpark via Henty Street will be impacted. A crane will be onsite to unload the building components, and we ask the community to exercise caution and use the Hurd Street carpark entrance.

Council is committed to improving public infrastructure that supports a vibrant and welcoming town centre. We look forward to sharing more updates as works continue.

Council is pleased to advise that demolition, plumbing, and electrical works at the CBD Amenities site have now been completed. The project will shortly progress to the next phase, with construction of the new concrete slab scheduled to commence later this week.

Meanwhile, the new amenities building is currently being fabricated off-site in a controlled factory environment. Upon completion, the structure will be transported to the site for installation, internal fit-out, and final commissioning.

Council appreciates the community’s continued support and looks forward to delivering improved public facilities in the coming months.

WORKS TO COMMENCE ON AMENITIES BUILDING

Council is happy to advise that the long-awaited upgrade works for the CBD Amenities at 27 Henty Street, Portland, will commence on Wednesday 18 June 2025. These works will involve the demolition of the existing toilet block and construction of a new facility designed to enhance accessibility and convenience for the community. This project is expected to be completed within approximately four months, subject to weather conditions.

    Project impact and site access

To facilitate the commencement of works, the existing amenities building will be closed to the public from the 18 June 2025. Temporary toilets will be provided near the CBD amenities (please refer to image). Should people not wish to use the temporary toilets or require showers, signage will be placed on the site fencing to help community find the location of alternative facilities and showers. These are also listed in the FAQs on this page.

Access to the carpark from Henty Street will not be impacted. The footpath on Henty Street and into the carpark will still be usable but the width will be reduced due to the installation of site fencing. We would ask that people take care when moving around the works.

Thank you to everyone for taking time to provide feedback during the consultation period with nearly 150 people visiting the project page during the consultation period. The vast majority of people were in favour of the design and a number of comments were received with safety and accessibility strong priorities for our community. We have reviewed the feedback and made amendments to the design where appropriate.

Demolition works are set to commence in coming weeks. The site will be closed for an extended period while the new toilets are constructed. Temporary portable toilets will be located in the carpark across from the site. Other toilet locations in Portland are:
