Project Summary

This submission is to inform the community of Glenelg Shire Council’s intention to lease two car parking spaces 67-71 Henty Street Casterton to Evie Networks Pty Ltd to allow for the installation of a publicly accessible Electric Charging Unit.

The above image outlines proposed carparks at 67-71 Henty Street Casterton, outside of the Town Hall, which will be leased and used for the sole purpose of charging Electric Vehicles. An electric charging unit will be installed where the yellow square is highlighted.

Background

The lease of the subject land requires approval by VicRoads.

  • Evie Networks on behalf of Fast Cities Australia Pty Ltd were successful in receiving the contract to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers in Glenelg Shire through the State Government’s 2021 “Destination Charging Across Victoria” program which provided $5 million in grants to establish a public electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging network across Victoria.
  • Sites were investigated at Casterton, Portland and Dartmoor, all of which have been identified as key charging locations for the network. The proposed site in Casterton was deemed the most appropriate site in town, meeting all requirements including being close to amenities and shops, well-lit at night, with access to an adequate power supply.
  • The lease allowing installation is reflective of Council’s commitment to promoting environmental sustainability by providing public access to electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. It also recognises the positive impact the installation may have on visitation to the town and the potential to increase economic activity locally.

Benefits of the project (Community benefits)

  • Promoting Environmental Sustainability.
  • Public access to EV Charging has the potential to increase visitation to the city.
  • Access to EV charging will benefit locals and visitors alike as more vehicles transition to electric power.

Project Impacts (Community impacts)

The installation will enable tourists and residents access to a public electric charging unit which will be managed by Evie Networks Pty Ltd, who were contracted by the State Government in 2022 to develop a publicly accessible EV charging network across Victoria.

The two carparks will be used for the sole purpose of charging vehicles and will not be accessible as general parking bays.
