Council has been successful in securing $3.2 million from Sports and Recreation Victoria, through a Community Sport Infrastructure Grant, $350,000 from Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Phase 3 and a further $1 million has been committed by the Glenelg Shire Council.

The project is outlined in the Alexandra Park Master Plan, and will include construction of an all abilities sports pavilion, accessible pathways, car parking and sports field lighting. In addition to this, construction of a new electronic scoreboard that will provide better viewing for spectators and ease of operation for users.

Site-specific plans for each aspect of the project have been completed, while preparatory civil works including access road realignment, sport field drainage, upgrading of the reserve’s electrical power supply and new netball courts with at-grade access were completed as part of Stage 1 works.

Universal design considerations underpin the project, which offers a level of accessibility and amenity for users of all ages and abilities that is unmatched anywhere in the region. Features such as accessible pathways and car parking, lift and ramp pavilion access, accessible viewing areas and accessible toilets on both levels of the pavilion underscore Council’s commitment to the development of community facilities that provide genuine opportunities for residents to participate in sport and active recreation regardless of the age or level of ability.

In 2022 and 2023, the Tri State Games will be held in Portland, being hosted by Kyeema Support Services in conjunction with Glenelg Shire Council. The delivery of improvements to Alexandra Park through this project are considered critical to the successful staging of this inter-state event that will be a draw card for visitors and participants and will contribute positively to the local economy.

Contractor Mossop Construction and Interiors have been appointed and works commenced in June 2022.
