Consultation has concluded

In 2018, it was estimated that weeds would impose an overall average cost of nearly $5 billion across Australia and that $112 million per year of taxpayer expenditure was allocated to weed control expenditures on public lands, indigenous lands, and for research (McLeod, R. (2018) Annual Costs of Weeds in Australia. eSYS Development Pty Limited. Published by the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions, Canberra, Australia).

For the past several years, Council has been fortunate to receive funding from the State Government for the control of declared weed plants and pest animals on Council owned or managed roadsides. As part of the funding requirements, Council is required to prepare a Roadside Weeds and Pests Program Control Plan. The Plan typically covers a two to three year period. The previous Plan is now out of date and a new Plan for the period from July 2023 to June 2026 has been developed.

The Glenelg Shire Council is responsible for the management of approximately 2,575km of local roads, or around 90% of the length of roadsides within the shire, comprising:

  • 971 km of sealed rural local roads
  • 1408 km of rural gravel surfaced roads
  • 154 km of sealed urban road
  • 44 km of unsealed urban roads

Part of the development of the Plan includes community and stakeholder consultation. This will be undertaken from Monday 7 to Friday 25 August, 2023.

The DRAFT Roadside Weeds and Pests Program Control Plan 2023-2026 can be downloaded from the documents tab on the right and feedback can be submitted through the Feedback Form below. The current list of declared noxious weeds for the Glenelg Shire can also be found in Appendix 1 of the DRAFT Plan. The old Roadside Weeds and Pests Program Control Plan 2017-2019 can be found here.

Please be aware that the DRAFT Roadside Weeds and Pests Program Control Plan 2023-2026 is for the control of declared weed plants and pest animals on Council owned or managed roadsides only. It does not cover declared weeds on State roads or environmental weeds and other plants and animals.
