Glenelg Shire Open Space Strategy

Thank you to everyone across the Shire who contributed to the Glenelg Shire Open Space Strategy through our community listening posts, workshops and survey.

Following extensive public consultation and research, a draft Open Space Strategy has been developed and open for public comments.

The Glenelg Shire Council is working with Tredwell Management to prepare an Open Space Strategy to provide a strategic direction for open space planning over the next 20 years. The project applies to open spaces across all of the Glenelg Shire. This includes places such as parks, reserves, gardens, sports grounds and trails.

An important component of this project is to understand the community's needs and values with respect to open space. Your input into this survey is greatly appreciated and will inform the strategic directions of the Open Space Strategy.

Benefits of the project

This project provide guidance for the future planning, provision, design and management of open space in Glenelg Shire through an enhanced understanding of:

the existing open space network;

community use and values relating to open space;

the relationship between open space areas and surrounding land uses

Project Impacts

This Strategy will impact the entire Glenelg Shire community. Open space provides a wide range of benefits to individuals and communities, such as:

  • Improved physical and mental health
  • Improved health and wellbeing
  • Protection of environmentally significant areas
  • Establishment of buffer zones, protecting local character and visual amenity
  • Connectivity and accessibility across communities

Potential implications may include changes to existing open spaces to enhance functionality, changes to the use and management of open spaces and a range of strategic initiatives which invest in open spaces which are identified to be of the highest value.

Timeline

It is anticipated that the Open Space Strategy will be finalised by March 2019.

    Community Engagement Feedback Form - Glenelg Shire Open Space Strategy

    To ensure we capture the future needs of our community we invite you to complete the Community Engagement Feedback Form for the Glenelg Shire Open Space Strategy. 

    The Open Space Strategy will ensure that Council can take a strategically planned approach to future planning, provision, design and management of open space across the Shire. 

    Your feedback will be collated and will help to determine the issues and opportunities regarding Open Space across the Shire. Respondents will be kept informed as the project progresses, with the opportunity to provide further input during the Community Review Period in mid-2018 when the draft Open
