A Changing Place is larger than standard accessible toilets and has extra features including a height adjustable adult sized changing table, a tracking hoist system, space for 2 carers and a safer, cleaner environment. To view a summary of our most recent consultation click here.

Glenelg Shire Council has received funding through the Department of Health and Human Services for the development of a Changing Places facility in Portland. The facility will be located on the Portland Foreshore in close proximity to disabled parking and the All Abilities Play Space.

Glenelg Shire Council is committed to the provision of appropriate and accessible facilities to people of all abilities, the Changing Places project is a priority, and is an important inclusion to the proposed redevelopment of the Portland Foreshore which will also include accessible pathways and a new inclusive play space.

Benefits of the project

Short-term outcomes

- access considerations a focus of foreshore redevelopment

- More opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in recreation activities

- Changing places facilities allow people with a disability and their families and carers to spend more time in their communities

- In combination with the other aspects of the Portland Foreshore redevelopment, this facility will allow greater participation in community events and activities in this area.

Long-term outcomes

- Tourist attraction, ongoing commitment to access,

- Social integration/inclusion is a goal of universal design and promotes health and wellbeing. This facility will facilitate social inclusion of people with disabilities.

- Will provide greater tourism opportunities for people with a disability and their families.

- Opportunities for business to benefit from increased tourism to Portland and surrounds.

    Detailed design has been completed for construction of the Changing Place Facility.

    Construction works on the facility are beginning next week, 20 May 2019, with the anticipated completion in mid June 2019.

    The public is reminded for this time the public toilet facility between the skate park and Navy Cadet building will be a construction site and to take care for the safety of all
