Glenelg Shire Council has been successful in securing $1.5 million from The Victorian Government through the Victorian Building Works package to deliver the Cape Bridgewater Master Plan Infrastructure Upgrade. With Council's contribution, $750,000 has been assigned to the Cape Bridgewater Master Plan Infrastructure Upgrade which seeks to improve accessibility and amenities through the construction of sealed car parking facilities at the area of the Café and Surf Life Saving Club, creating pedestrian linkages along Bridgewater bay beach and connection boardwalks to help protect the sensitive dunes by creating beach entrance points.

The upgrade of the existing public amenities block will provide a contemporary facility and greater capacity to cater for increased visitation to the foreshore.

The Master Plan was developed in 2014, following extensive community consultation.

Stage one revetment works commenced in early 2021 and expected to be completed by early December 2021, with an overall project completion by May 2022.

Budget $2.25 million – Stage One

Stage One – Revetment works are now complete. The beach access is now open. We are excited to welcome visitors and local back to the popular beach.

You will notice that bollards are in place and areas are flagged off. There are temporary bollards in front of the viewing platform to prevent cars from driving up on it. Topsoil has been placed in front of the carpark to encourage the grass to re-grow. As a result, these areas have been flagged off to allow the grass to grow. Over the coming weeks permanent, steel handrails will be installed on all stair access points. These works will be periodic and will have a limited impact, with only one access point closed at a time. At least one wheelchair access ramps will remain open throughout.

Stage Two Works

Following earlier difficulties in sourcing contractors, Stage two works have now been successfully tendered and we are pleased to confirm local contractors GR Carr will be completing this next key stage of the Cape Bridgewater Foreshore works.

Works are now scheduled to commence in early 2023, to ensure Cape Bridgewater remains open and inviting throughout the peak summer period free of construction works.

Stage 2 works will include:

  • upgrades to carparking
  • a connecting boardwalk and footpaths. This will create a connecting pathway to all designed car parking areas
  • further landscaping
  • seats
  • picnic tables
  • barbecue facilities
  • and solar lighting.

Stage Two Works due to commence

Stage Two works are due to commence in the coming weeks.

These works have been designed in response to the consultation feedback received on the Cape Bridgewater Masterplan including the need to upgrade the carparks, provision of a BBQ, picnic tables and seating. Works are also looking to integrate with and protect the natural environment, with furniture and a boardwalk built from materials to fit with the existing environment, formalised pathways and additional drainage for better stormwater management to minimise erosion. The footpath and integrated boardwalk will provide all abilities access to the facilities and beach access points from the 3 carparks.

Drawings for these works have been included in the Document Library to the right. Please continue to follow the project updates here on Your Say Glenelg and Facebook for any details of the works that may impact utilisation of the facilities at Bridgewater.
